Identifying and Registering as a

Person with a Disability

Disabilities involve substantial limitations and are distinct from common conditions not substantially limiting major life activities.

If you have a disability that substantially limits a major life activity and would like to request accommodations, you should register with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) as outlined below.  Many reasonable accommodations require significant pre-planning. Registration with the RCPD prior to situations requiring accommodations is essential. The process begins with:

     1.  Completion of a Self-Identification Card for Students with Disabilities (located in

each admissions packet) or by confidential appointment with an RCPD Disability

          Specialist.

     2.  Before meeting with an RCPD Disability Specialist, it is essential to provide them

with comprehensive written documentation of disability. Documentation of a

disability MUST appear on official letterhead from a licensed medical, diagnostic

or psychological professional and include a diagnosis, scope or degree of

involvement, and summary of related functional limitations.

     3.  An RCPD Disability Specialist reviews the documentation and functional

limitations to determine if a condition rises to the level of a disability,

substantially limiting a major life activity.

     4. If the provided documentation validates a disability, the RCPD Disability

Specialist will determine which classroom accommodations (if any) are

appropriate for the documented disability and provide validation/verification of

          these.
