The
student-athlete community outreach program PACT " Putting Athletes
and Community Together," offers the potential to develop student
athletes while improving the community through effective leadership
and volunteering your services. PACT is strictly charitable and
offers student- athletes the chance to get involved and make a difference
in someone's life in the Lansing and surrounding communities. Under
PACT there are three main programs developed for student athletes
to have a chance to make an impact on the community.
The Pen Pal Program is a Student-Athlete Development program involving local elementary schools who participate to help promote literacy
and to increase the awareness of what student-athletes go through
in their daily lives at MSU. As a pen pal, you the student athlete
will be providing insight on collegiate life. You will interact
with your classroom through questions, which might possibly range
from "what do you want to be when you grow up?" to "what kind of
pets do you have?" Not only is this program an excellent avenue
to get involved in the community, but this is also an opportunity
for you to help start the thinking process about college to a child.
Each student-athlete will be given a classroom. Once your
class is assigned you will kick of your communication with your
classroom by writing an introductory letter to your class telling
a little- bit about yourself. Around two-three weeks later after
your class has received your letter you will visit your pen pal
class and get a chance to meet the children and teacher face to
face. During the course of the academic year, you will write a total
of six letters (about one per month). Make sure you are responsible
and have your letters in on time.

(Posters for Patients) is a community
outreach program that offers student -athletes the opportunity to go inside
a Lansing School and help children design posters for patients inside
Sparrow Hospital. Student-athletes you will be aiding the child
in developing their thoughts on what they want to illustrate in
their pictures. Once the posters in your class are designed, you
or another fellow student-athlete will deliver the posters to patients
in the hospital. This is a chance for you the student-athlete to
help a child discover and develop their educational skills through
art and illustration.
Make sure you are on time and are able to make each session
you have signed up for. Remember these children look up to you and
look forward to seeing a MSU athlete.
