The mission of Athletes for Hope University is to promote social change through the volunteerism and charity of college athletes.
Since 2003, every varsity team (25) adopts a family for the holidays through the Salvation Army. They are responsible for raising money, buying and wrapping the gifts and then delivering them to the families.
Student-Athletes collect food donations for the Greater Lansing and MSU Food Banks.
Each year our athletes are requested by the schools in the greater Lansing area to come in and promote reading and the importance of education to the students during the month of March.
Each year student-athletes attend an event to provide a trick or treating opportunity for kids with medical or special needs.
Student-athletes volunteer at local schools for various events throughout the year.
Relay for Life
Student-athletes from all 25 sports fundraise to find cures for cancer and support those to fight back at Relay For Life each year.
The Women’s Gymnastics Team adopted breast cancer awareness as their cause in 2006. Each year they raise money and walk in the “Making Strides against Breast Cancer” 5K walk in October. They also have dedicated a home meet each year as the “Flip for a Cure” meet. All proceeds from the meet go to the American Cancer Society Making Strides against Breast Cancer.
Each year at the holiday time, the Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving teams volunteer at the Salvation Army Distribution Center.
In 2007, the Men’s Ice Hockey team adopted fighting children’s cancer as acause. Through this initiative "Chuck A Puck" was started. Student-athletes sell foam pucks that are later tossed on the ice where the individual closest to the center wins a prize. The idea is to raise money and awareness for this cause. This event was started by former MSU & current Detroit Red Wing; Justin Abdelkader, and former hockey player Dan Sturges.
